UNA DE MIS MAYORES FUENTES DE INSPIRACIÓN
La historia de vida que ha impactado mi vida en la manera más profunda es la de Doña Balbina Guity, una mujer nacida en Junio de 1912 en Santa Rosa de Aguán, Honduras. Doña Balbina Guity no llegó más que a 3er grado de educación primaria. La tragedia tocó las puertas de su familia a temprana edad. Siendo ella la mayor de sus hermanos tuvo que hacerse cargo de todos ellos (4 en total) desde la edad de 15 años. Teniendo un espíritu luchador tuvo que dejar a un lado muchas cosas, que las niñas de su edad disfrutaban, para poder sacar adelante a sus hermanos.
Tres años después de quedar huérfana, trajo al mundo a su primer hijo y luego a nueve más. Del total de sus 10 hijos, 5 murieron a muy temprana edad debido a las condiciones de extrema pobreza en la que vivían. Muchas veces les tocó vivir en casas hechas de cartón que tenían que reconstruir cada vez que las intensas lluvias del trópico Hondureño azotaban. Una mujer valiente y esforzada, Doña Balbina se propuso que sus hijos no pasarían por las mismas penurias que ella tuvo que sufrir y que todos ellos tendrían acceso a toda la educación formal que ella les pudiera proveer. De ahí que a cada uno de sus hijos los inscribió en el sistema de educación pública y aunque generalmente les tocó ir descalzos a la escuela, nunca les falto el pan del saber.
Lavando y planchando ropa ajena, vendiendo pan en la calle y comida ambulantemente, Doña Balbina siempre proveyó a los suyos de lo básico. Lo hizo con sus hermanos, con sus hijos y también con sus nietos, mientras sus hijos estudiaban o trabajaban en otras ciudades buscando un futuro mejor.
Aunque la escasez económica era tremenda, una de las cualidades que la caracterizaba era su generosidad. Constantemente, Doña Balbina abría las puertas de su casa a jóvenes que llegaban de otras ciudades a buscar empleo pero no tenían donde dormir ni que comer. Doña Balbina los auspiciaba proveyéndoles techo y comida hasta que consiguieran un trabajo y pudieran defenderse por si mismos.
Gracias a la bendición de Dios y a su esfuerzo, Doña Balbina y sus generaciones fueron prosperando poco a poco en todo sentido. Aunque ella sólo alcanzó a culminar el 3er grado, todos sus hijos terminaron al menos la secundaria, incluso una de ellas continuó estudiando hasta lograr una Licenciatura en Enfermería y luego una Maestría en Epidemiología y otra en Salud Pública. Actualmente labora como catedrática en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, la más grande del país, con más de 80,000 estudiantes.
De la generación siguiente, los nietos de Doña Balbina, casi todos culminaron la educación secundaria, varios han alcanzado un grado universitario e incluso uno ha alcanzado 2 títulos de maestría (y está en la fase final de completar otros 2) en universidades nacionales y extranjeras .
Tuve el privilegio de convivir y disfrutar a Doña Balbina Guity, mi abuela, hasta que ella se fue a Casa con el Señor, cuando tenía yo 21 años. Gracias a la experiencia vivida en mi familia, puedo decir con propiedad: Si es posible! Creo que es posible crecer, creo que es posible avanzar, creo que es posible salir de la situación actual, cualquiera que sea su nombre, creo que es posible alcanzar tus sueños. Nadie dijo que iba a ser fácil, pero si es posible.
Doy gracias a Dios ya que por Su gracia puedo compartir esta historia. Así mismo, por Su gracia, esta historia se repetirá para muchos jóvenes, muchas familias a las cuales les sería imposible salir adelante por sus propios medios.
Creo con convicción y seguridad que eventualmente, esta historia se repetirá también con esta nación a la cual Dios Ama tanto.

ONE OF MY GREATEST SOURCES OF INSPIRATION The story that has impacted my life in the deepest way is that of Mrs. Balbina Guity, a woman born on June 1912 in Santa Rosa de Aguan, Honduras. Mrs. Balbina didn’t get past 3rd grade of elementary school. Tragedy touched the doors of her family at an early age. Being the eldest of her siblings, she had to take care of all of them (4 in total) after her parents died when she was 15 years. With a fearless spirit, young Balbina denied herself the pleasure of many things that girls her age enjoyed, in order to raise her siblings. Three years after becoming an orphan, she gave birth to her first child and then to nine more. Of the total of 10 children, 5 died at an early age due to the extreme poverty conditions in which they lived. For many years they had to live in houses made of cardboard and had to rebuild them every time heavy rains lashed the Honduran tropic. A brave and courageous woman, Mrs. Balbina was determined not to allow her children withstand the same hardships she had suffered. It was her utmost desire to give each of them access to formal education. Hence, she enrolled them in public schools. Although they usually had to go to school barefoot, they never lacked of the “bread of knowledge”. Laundering and ironing other people’s clothes, selling bread, and food she cooked, on the street, Mrs. Balbina always provided the basics for her family. She did it for her siblings, her children and her grandchildren while her children were studying or working in other cities so as to secure a better future. Although economic scarcity was tremendous, one of the qualities that distinguished her was her generosity. Consistently, Mrs. Balbina would open the doors of her house to young people who came from other cities, looking for work without a place to sleep and food to eat. Mrs. Balbina sponsored them by providing food and shelter until they got a job to sustain themselves. With God’s blessing and tremendous efforts, Mrs. Balbina and her generations gradually prospered in every way. Although she only managed to finish 3rd grade, all children completed at least High School, one of them furthered her education from obtaining a Nursing Degree to a a dual Masters in Epidemiology and Public Health. She currently works as a professor at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, the largest university in the country, with more than 80,000 students. Within the next generation, the grandchildren of Mrs. Balbina, almost everyone has completed High School, several have obtained College Degrees and one of them has achieved two master’s degrees (& is about to complete other two) from national and foreign universities. I was privileged to live and enjoy Mrs. Balbina Guity, my grandmother, until she went home to be with the Lord, when I was 21 years old. Thanks to the experience in my family, I can properly say: IT IS POSSIBLE! I believe it is possible to grow, I believe that progress is possible, I believe it is possible to surpass the current situation, whatever its name, I believe it is possible to pursue your dreams. Nobody said it would be easy, but it is possible. I thank God that by His grace I can share this story. Also, by His grace, this story will be repeated for many young people, many families for whom it would be impossible to make it on their own. I believe with strong conviction and confidence that eventually, this story will also be repeated in this nation whom God loves so much.
